Practicing Creativity

Thursday night's experiment was a success:  50 women gathered in the gorgeous, girly atelier of Kathlin Argiro for a spirited, introspective and inspiring conversation on the topic of "Women & Creativity" -- and the range of perspectives and insights were as fascinating and diverse as the women there.

Throughout the night, we collected the themes and tools that rose to the surface and compiled them into the "practices" below, tools for taking the conversation forward into your daily lives.  Enjoy, and may the creative force be with you!

THE PRACTICES

PRACTICE #1

Take the phrase "YOU HAVE PERMISSION" and begin to use it as a mantra, post it in your bathroom, your office, on your refrigerator.  See what opens up for you when you give yourself permission to do/taste/try/be/believe/risk.  Feel free to add on what you like permission for, i.e., to fail, to experiment, to look foolish, to try, to make biscotti, etc.

PRACTICE #2

Think about all the ways in which we access our creativity:  singing songs, saying "what's next," invoking the Best Friend Must Attend Rule, being naughty, breaking the rules, staring out the window for 20 minutes, through a known structure or process, etc.  Notice when you are accessing your creativity, and take note of how you do it.  Acknowledge yourself for
doing it, and when you are stuck, consider that your access is available for you to choose, or not.

PRACTICE #3

We spoke about being a vessel for creative energy, that it comes through us and does not belong to us.  By expressing gratitude, we recognize the bounty of creativity that exists, and acknowledge the unique ways in which it may manifest itself. With this in mind, Honor a woman who has made a contribution to you.

WOMEN & CREATIVITY

A collaborative discussion led by Broad Collective and In the Company of Women

Consider the idea that creativity provides access to power for women and that all women are inherently creative. As a woman, you are creative; as a woman, you are powerful.

Every day we have opportunities to be creative. The way we dress, decorate, communicate, plan, write, sing or paint can be creative expression.

What is the relationship between creativity and womanhood? As a woman, how are you creative and how do you express that creativity? How do you cultivate, measure, and acknowledge creativity in yourself and in other women? How does creativity manifest in ways outside obvious talents? Can creativity come in a daydream, in multi-tasking, in surprise, in failure? How do you access your own creativity when you feel stuck? If you had more awareness of your creativity and more access to it in any given moment, what impact would that have on your life?

Join us for this unique conversation to connect with other women and gain access to the creative power in you!

WHEN: Thursday, Sept. 20th, 7:00pm - 10:00 pm

WHERE: 265 W. 37th St. , 7th Floor (look for the pink door!)

Space is limited, reservations are required.

There is an optional $10 donation to cover event costs

Strength in Openness

Monday's cocktail party was another great success.  There were writers and filmmakers, a feng shui consultant, producers and actors, a pianist/martial artist/MIT professor, photographers and teachers and life coaches galore!  The brag table was full of flyers and business cards and discounted services for the women of Broad Collective - well-deserved self-promotion and organic marketing in action!

When new people walk in to our parties, there's that initial awkard moment, then a Broad with a clipboard breaks the ice, introductions are made, and the new woman is embraced by the generous energy of the group.  At every party, I see women sharing information, resources and insights.  I see women making connections, learning about one anothers' work, needs and goals -- women deep in conversation, making new contacts and new friends.

From the openness in the room, a world of possibility is born, and that's the spirit of Broad Collective!  Thanks to everyone who came for an inspiring and very fun night!

What happens at a Broad Collective party?  Women meet kindred spirits and plot new projects.  Alliances are formed.  Friendships are born.  Artist-entrepreneurs practice talking about what they do with other women who totally get it.

Connections are made that lead to new jobs, new clients and new opportunities.  There is laughter.  There are drinks.  Doesn’t that sound fun?

There is a world of possibility when powerful, passionate women put their minds together.  We hope to see you there!
